India’s Political Analysts Can No Longer Ignore BJP and Its “Washing Machine” Mechanism

In India, “washing machine” has a negative connotation as the term is used by political analysts to describe BJP’s manner of covering up cases of corruption. Actually, many of the politicians belonging to the ruling party were reported as having previous criminal records even before they joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The term “washing machine” also implies how such records were covered up and even expunged when they joined BJP, as a means to give the INC turncoats a clean slate.

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswas Sarma, Cited as Classic Example

The present Chief Minister of the Government of Assam, Himanta Biswas Sarma is cited as a classic example of BJP’s “washing machine politics.” Sarma has been accused of being “corrupt to the core” for taking bribes while holding various office as a Minister of Assam under the former ruling political party, the Indian National Congress (INC). However, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came into power in 2014, Sarma shifted political affiliation to BJP to continue holding office as one of the ministers of the government of Assan. Despite the extensive lists of corruption cases filed against him by the Congress Bureau of Investigation (a.k.a. Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI), Sarma was able to stay in office as a BJP political appointee.

The point driven by analysts and members of the opposition party is that India’s prestigious investigative bodies, like the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are being used as washing machines by the present administration.

Are Washing Machines Popular in India

During the past 10 years, washing machines have become quite popular in India. Yet its negative implications and insinuations if used in Indian politics are easily understood by majority of the Indian population supporting the BJP.

After all, Bharatiya Janata literally means People’s Party, as it has the support of leaders in the higher castes, particularly in northern India. Yet in order to win the support of the lower castes, numerous lower-caste members were appointed to prominent BJP positions. Doing so demonstrated the party’s goal to rebuild Inidia in accordance with Hindu culture under a unified state.

However several years after since 2014, political analysts have pointed out that out of the 5,500 cases of money laundering activities brought against government officials, only 23 have led to convictions. This number does not even include BJP politicians who have pending cases of corrupt and abusive practices.

This explains why the term washing machine in India is popular for its political context. Mainly because it’s easily understood as an invisible mechanism use in washing away the BCI and ED corruption cases filed against BJP political appointees.
