This is How We Can Help the Pastor Who Was Attacked by a ‘Militant Atheist’
A quick note that the pastor didn't even know Maxie was an atheist until after the attack, which appeared completely unprovoked. Hayes only learned of Maxie's atheism when it was broken, loudly, by the press, presumably to spice up headlines.
Hemant sums up two reasons why this is important which coincide well with how I feel about this.
That’s what worries me. I don’t want this particular incident to affect the atheist community at large because some Christians may argue that Maxie, despite being an anomaly, somehow “proves” that godless people are immoral or violent. We know the reality is far from that, but many others in our society don’t.It's sad we need to do this while Christians do not. When homegrown terrorists in the United States bomb abortion clinics or government buildings, it simply doesn't matter that they are most often at least culturally Christian. When Christians do these horrible things, their Christianity has nothing to do with it. They are bad Christians or not Christians.
Meanwhile, the press leaps on any story involving a Muslim or, as we now see, an atheists. Terrorist Muslim. Militant Atheist.
Well, here's an opportunity for atheists to show that they are compassionate human beings. And although this is for a US pastor, I think we can all understand that negative press in the United States does have an effect on how we are perceived here in Canada and across he world.
Hemant also touches on the Humanist motivation for supporting Hayes - because it's the right thing to do, the human thing to do.
Hayes seemed genuinely surprised by the outreach he’s received from people everywhere, including from atheists. But it shouldn’t be a surprise that atheists would want to help him out after something as awful as this. It should be a given. If God’s not looking out for us, we have to look out for each other.Because atheists, like Christians and Muslims are human beings who care for other human beings. No religion or god is necessary for that which bonds us together.
